AND ENJOY THE MIRE ALL YEAR ROUND

Exploring a mire is easy if there is a safe duckboard route over the marshy tussocks, as there is in Kauhaneva. However, stepping off the duckboards might seem frightening. Taking the first step is not made easier by the knowledge that in the best swamps, there may be several metres of peat and mud on top of the hard soil.

TIPS FOR A SAFE TRIP TO THE MIRE

  • Suitable guidance: Find out what equipment you need, and utilise the instructions found on both our and Metsähallitus’ website. Your rubber boots may occasionally fill up with water, but wet socks are not dangerous.
  • Frost-time visit: When ice covers all the land, the undefeated wetland turns instantly into an open field where moving about is easy.
  • Remember the surprises of the mire: Flowing water and the gases of the swamp make holes in the ice which can be difficult to notice.
  • Find tranquillity in the wintertime wetland: In the winter, the mire becomes quiet and rugged. Ravens keeping an eye on the landscape are often your only companions on a winter swamp excursion.
  • Taste the berries: Berries are most beneficial when you pick them yourself and eat them on the spot, because then the nature’s positive health effects extend to the whole body. What makes this experience unbeatable is that the berries are clean, they can be eaten directly from the bush, and they are available to all.
  • Utilise the duckboard trails: A walk along duckboards is a great way to enjoy the magic of a summer night. Bird song subsides as the sun sets, but hidden in the wet areas, the birds continue their occasional chatter throughout the night.
  • Spend a night in wetland nature: The local national parks have camping sites, where it is possible to spend an unforgettable night listening to the sounds of nature. With enough courage, it is possible to spend a night under a lean-to shelter also in the winter. However, remember to prepare yourself for dealing with the frost of a winter’s night.
