The ELY Centers and the Leader Offices of the area have funded the development of Lauhanvuori - Hämeenkangas UNESCO Global Geopark for many years. The Geopark has several ongoing projects funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE GEOPARK

The aim of the Kestävää kehitystä Geoparkissa project is to promote sustainable development in the Geopark area in many ways, both in the tourism industry and in general. In addition to tourism companies and tourists, the target group of the project is the residents of the area. The aim of the project is to increase awareness of sustainable development. Visitor surveys at Geopark sites provide a basis for the updating of the sustainable tourism plans of the area.

The project promotes the development, commercialization and visibility of tourism in the Geopark in a variety of ways both in Finland and internationally. The project will provide different user groups with information about the Geopark. The information will be delivered by innovative methods. Many different actors cooperate in the implementation of the project. For example the expertise of research institutes and universities will be utilized. There is also cooperation with many NGOs.

The project is managed by Lauhanvuori – Hämeenkangas Geopark ry and co-implemented with Natural Resources Institute Finland.

GEOPARK TOWARDS UNESCO STATUS SUSTAINABLY 

In the Geopark kestävästi kohti UNESCOa project Lauhanvuori – Hämeenkangas Geopark is being further developed towards membership of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The project’s measures are based on the development recommendations given to the Geopark by UNESCO representatives after the summer 2019 field evaluation.

In the project, a sustainable development action plan for Geopark will be developed in cooperation with the stakeholders. Also Geopark’s own commitment to action for the Sitoumus2050 campaign will be given. The tourism companies will be guided towards more sustainable practises.

The Geopark area’s schools, for example, have given environmental education for years. In the project environmental education will be developed further for various target groups also from abroad. In addition, Geopark’s cooperation with universities and other institutes of higher education will be strengthened and diversified.

One of the most important tasks of geoparks is to distribute diverse information related to geology, living nature and cultural environment to visitors of the area. The project aims to find out how Geopark’s info kiosks could be developed and if an information center could be created.

THE INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROJECT IN LAUHANVUORI – HÄMEENKANGAS GEOPARK

The aim of the Suokansan sydänmailla project is to help Lauhanvuori – Hämeenkangas Geopark to achieve UNESCO Global Geopark status by developing Geopark’s environmental education programs. Geo education and environmental education are one of the most important tasks of UNESCO Global Geoparks and a requirement for achieving the status.

The project carries out practical environmental education work and creates international cooperation. The aim is to provide young people of the area with experiences and information about environmental values, as well as field trips to the area’s natural and geological sites, to monitor changes in the environment and to observe and record environmental phenomena. As a result, the knowledge of children and young people and as a consequence also the rest of the local population about their surroundings will improve. Nature related activities help to perceive the effects of one’s own activities on the environment and increases the desire to take care of the environment and act in a sustainable way.

The project is coordinated by the upper secondary school of Kankaanpää.

DEVELOPING GEOPARK AS A CYCLING DESTINATION

The aim of the Geopark pyörämatkailun maailmankartalle project is to connect the municipalities, services, sites and existing routes in the Geopark area with a comprehensive cycling route and to connect the route with other cycling routes. In the project smart solutions will be developed and utilized, for example by improving the digital accessibility of route data and by developing ebike-friendly services and self service bicycle maintenance stations, to promote sustainable tourism in the area. The project produces a variety of communication materials for different channels.

The project will be implemented in close cooperation with the municipalities, companies and NGOs of the area, Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife Finland, experts and local people, as well as other stakeholders. The target groups are, in addition to cyclists, other tourists and cycling enthusiasts, local people, companies and service providers.
