The Geopark – A dream destination in summertime

The Geopark offers the best for hikers and tourists in summer. Unique nature and an attractive cultural offer invite you to visit our UNESCO destination.

The scent of mires and the taste of bilberries 

Lauhanvuori – Hämeenkangas UNESCO Global Geopark is the Geopark of mires. In the early summer on hiking trails the air is filled with the scent of wild rosemary. The Geopark has several mire sites that are also suitable for hiking with children. Learn more on the brochure.

On a sunny, warm summer day, you may need a dip in refreshing water of a pond, a lake or  a calm river. Learn more on our digital magazine. For example, in Kauhalammi in Kauhaneva-Pohjankangas National Park and Spitaalijärvi in ​​Lauhanvuori National Park, you can take a dip in the water from the pier. However, these bathing sites of the National Parks are not official.

Spend a night in a tent or a hammock and experience the magical atmosphere of the Geopark’s summer nights and early mornings. You can find camping sites on the Retkikartta map service.

Please note that camping in protected areas is only allowed in marked areas. Please check site-specific instructions on Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife Finland’s website. Companies’ camping sites are also a great option for campers. You can find those on our Accommodation page.

In the late summer, the forests of the Geopark serve an abundance of bilberries. Eat some of the berries right away and pick up with you as well. Make a pie from bilberries by the campfire, for example, according to the scouters’ recipe (in Finnish). Learn more about the yield of the Geopark’s forests and mires.

Experience the summer of the Geopark by bike

You can explore the Geopark and its destinations comfortably by bike. The cycling route covering the entire Geopark area is currently being developed and the route is expected to be available to customers next year. Enjoy by the campfire

A quiet lunch by the campfire is one of the highlights of the trip. Make a lunch trip a luxury and order food for your family or group ready for the campfire, or grab a snack from the cafes or restaurants in the area.

The Geopark has lots of great resting places where you can spend time by the campfire. There is firewood freely available to visitors in most of these sites. Campfires are only allowed at marked campfire sites. You can find some of these on the Retkikartta map service. You can find information on other campfire sites on the Geopark municipalities’ own web pages.

When nature is dry, the terrain can easily catch fire. During a forest fire warning, campfires are strictly forbidden. Please check the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website for current warnings. 

In summer, there can be plenty of hikers on the resting places at the same time. Please also take into account the safety distances and coronavirus guidelines when staying at the Geopark’s camp sites.

Outdoor Etiquette

When hiking, it is always important to consider nature and other people. Respect nature in every way and keep pets in a leash. Prevent the waste in advance. Bring your debris out of the forest and sort the garbage properly. Please use marked trails and follow the rules for different modes of travel. Stay overnight only in marked camping areas.

The Geopark of wonderful summer events and services

The Geopark’s summer is full of events: open-air concerts and summer theater, art and sports events in many forms. For example, Willi Karvia offers great concerts and theater experiences at the Cultural Center Skantz, inspired by a 17th-century fort.

The corona pandemic affects the organization of events, so please always ensure their implementation and special instructions on the organizers’ own pages. Please also consider the coronavirus guidelines while visiting the events of the area.

Businesses in the area offer safe experiences for families and small groups. You can find the companies’ offers at the Activities section of our website. You can also easily buy experiences from Geopark’s online store. Geopark’s partners are responsible for arranging the events, so always check their realization and special instructions directly from the organizers.

During the summer, the Geopark area is very lively. Cafes, restaurants, market squares, boutiques, farm shops and other services attract tourists and residents of the area with their versatile seasonal offerings. Country romance and nature experiences in Luomajärvi Horse Inn

Luomajärvi Horse Inn offers wonderful moments with horses, ponies and other domestic animals in a real old-fashioned rural setting. Learn more on Horse Inn’s website and book your own experience. Here are some examples of the offering:

Healing forest and dyeing plant tours of Outar in the National park

At the Outar’s healing forest tour in Lauhanvuori National Park you can experience and observe the well-being effects of the forest. During the forest walk, you move slowly, do nature exercises that open the senses and enjoy nature. Excursions can be arranged for small groups on request. Also book already a dyeing plant tour for July. During the tour you learn to identify plants suitable for dyeing. Also several color samples will be introduced. When the guide tells you more about plant dyeing, you will enjoy wild herb tea and a relaxed atmosphere in the pine foprest of Lauhanvuori National Park. The Spring Camp in SyVilla’s garden

SyVilla offers you a unique opportunity to take part in the spring work of the idyllic courtyard of the former croft at the end of May and beginning of June. At the camp you can e.g. renovate the flower beds, the greenhouse and the vegetable garden, and plant summer flowers under the guidance of a professional gardener. Shopping and experiences at Meggala Winery 

In Meggala winery’s store, located in the rural village of Venesjärvi in Kankaanpää, you can buy the farm’s wines, bread, pastries, honey, beers, cheeses and local handicrafts. At the café you can enjoy snacks, cheeses, coffee, wines, beers and other refreshments. À la carte dishes are served on restaurant days and on request.

The best nature holidays in Lauha

Lauha and its partners offer high-quality accommodation options, delicious food, sauna experiences, nature activities and guided tours next to Lauhanvuori National Park.

Lauhansarvi Nature Tourist Center is a versatile starting point for nature trips. With its clear waters and varied services, the Kangasjärvi camping site offers experiences for the whole family. Sympathetic Café-Confectionery Postelli

Sympathetic Café-Confectionery Postelli in a former red-brick post office next to the famous market square of Kankaanpää offers baged goods, such as delicious Geopark pastries.

On Thursdays and summer Saturdays you can enjoy the market atmosphere on the café terrace. In front of the café, there is an ice cream kiosk in summer. In Postelli you can also buy picnic snacks and handicrafts. The café welcomes cyclists and has the Welcome Cyclist label. Learn more on Postelli’s website (in Finnish).

A relaxing family holiday in Jämin Helmi cottage

Jämin Helmi cottage in Jämi, Hämeenkangas is a dream destination for families with children. The pond with the beach, Jämi Adventure Park and other activities in the area are very close by. Directly from the door of the cottage you can get to the easy routes of Hämeenkangas, where you can also move with a pram. Along the routes there are numerous sheds and other resting places for happy and easy picnics.

Geopark Holidays for families in Kuntoutuskeskus Kankaanpää

Kuntoutuskeskus Kankaanpää offers a wonderful setting for a holiday in the heart of the Geopark area, next to Hämeenkangas, close to the National Parks and other natural and cultural sites in the Geopark.

Enjoy your life in Valkoinen Puu Café

Valkoinen Puu Café is a place you must visit in Kauhajoki in summer. You can find the café in the beautiful old Ollonqvist’s mansion, which is maintained by a local heritage association. The selection of American style cakes baked on organic spelt or naturally gluten-free flour makes your mouth water. Fortunately, these delicacies can also be found at the cafés of Valkoinen Puu in Seinäjoki, Tampere and Jyväskylä.

In Kauhajoki, you can have coffee or lunch in the garden and admire the expressive animal statues of the local ITE artist Alpo Koivumäki. An art exhibition in Hella Gallery in the second floor of the mansion changes monthly. Learn more on the web pages of Valkoinen Puu Café.
