The high hills were used for surveying our country in the olden times. The trigonometrical beacons built on them allowed surveying directions to clearly visible landforms. These directions, measured from various sites, allowed for calculating the distances between places. This in turn helped create a point network, from which an exact map of the area could be drawn. Nowadays mapping is done with the help of satellite positioning and laser technology.
There have been several trigonometrical beacons on top of Alkkianvuori. The last one fell down in 2003. The tower was built in 1985 for the last triangulation survey. It was built from trees growing at the site.
