Sustainable tourism in Geopark promotes the preservation of the valuable geological, natural and cultural heritage of the region and financially supports local communities and the livelihoods of local inhabitants. Sustainable tourism also supports the well-being of the environment and society more broadly.

Metsähallitus principles of sustainable tourism

Most of Geopark’s sites are located in areas managed by Metsähallitus, such as national parks and other nature reserves. The activities of Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife Finland and its partners are guided by the principles of sustainable tourism, which are taken into account in all activities of Parks & Wildlife Finland and in cooperation with tourism operators in the regions.

National principles of sustainable tourism

Geopark helps tourism operators in the region develop their operations towards responsibility certification and the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label. Geopark aims to become a sustainable tourism destination in accordance with the STF label. 

We have signed the national principles of sustainable tourism, which commit us to making Finland a more sustainable tourism destination.

Geoparks as sustainable tourism areas

Lauhanvuori – Hämeenkangas Geopark is part of the global UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. Membership in the UNESCO network obliges Geoparks to promote implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are promoted through the requirements and guidelines set for Geoparks.
