Ancient shorelines of Alkkianvuori

The post-glacial isostatic uplift was ten times faster 10,000 to 8,000 years ago, compared to its current speed. The changes in the Baltic basin also affected the sea level. At times it rose at the pace as the land, which gave the illusion of the isostatic uplift stopping for a long while. The largest rocky shorelines of Alkkianvuori were born during these times.

The post-glacial uplift has raised the ancient shorelines over 170 metres above the sea level. The land still continues to rice about 8 mm per year, so the distance to the Baltic coast keeps on growing. Currently it is about 80 kilometres to the west.
