The winning plan for the cemetery gate design competition was described by the prize committee: 

“The plan is a comprehensive solution that takes advantage of symbols and nature. The hourglass theme as a symbol of time in gate structures is good. Sacred silence is conveyed ”

The gates were built at both ends of Kappelinkatu.
