Huidankeidas mire

Huidankeidas is a large swamp area consisting of several eccentric raised bogs on Kankaanpää's Honkajoki. It has a clear surface structure formed by hummocks and hollows, and the height differences of the structure is up to a meter. You can find extensive ponds with water surface in the swamp, which form a vast labyrinth in the western part of the swamp. The landscape is enlivened by individually shaped bog pines. Due to its landscape, Huidankeidas is one of Finland's most fascinating mires.

Bog iron ore was once lifted from the eastern part of Huidankeidas. It is formed bby precipitation of iron contained in groundwater when it reaches the oxygen-rich layer of the surface of the peat. Slabs and lumps consisting of rust-brown iron hydroxide, which were once used in the production of iron, are deposited in the swamp.

The area of Huidankeida was partially burned in the great forest fire of 1959. The second largest forest fire in Finland in the post-war period destroyed approximately 1,700 hectares of land, forest and several farms.
