Hyrrä artwork in Kankaanpää

Pertti Mäkinen & Reijo Paavilainen, 1997.

The name "Hyrrä" can be translated as spinning top.

The artwork located in the traffic distributor on Kuninkaanlähdeenkatu is made of rusty corten steel. The trip to Mexico inspired the artists to a world of form they had not used before. The artists have made large public sculptures together and separately.

The work is the little cousin of "Kehrä". The "Kehrä" is painted yellow and it is located on the Art Road between Pori and Kankaanpää. The work of artists Reijo Paavilainen and Pertti Mäkinen is monumental, not only because of it's size.

The "Hyrrä" brings out the sculpture’s ability to create the illusion of lightness and intangibility from heavy mass. The rotational motion of the spinning top resists the gravity of the earth as long as the motion is strong enough.
