Kasvot artwork in Kankaanpää

Pia Haapala, 2001.

The name ”Kasvot” can be translated as faces.

The faces of the Kankaanpää's market people were molded as plaster faces. Then the plaster faces were burned to the color of red bricks. After it, they were attached to the outer wall of the post. Some of the 13 faces have been removed in time, as have the people of the market, but new ones have become followers of the tradition.

The market is the meeting place where the rumors and gossip are exchanged, the market coffee is drank, the black sausage is queued. The unhurried enjoyment characterizes the Kankaanpää market which is filled with large numbers of summer cottagers, caravanners, locals and visitors of the neighboring municipalities.

The market day tradition began in 1902 and continues to be strong. Merchants have developed places of family tradition and will come hundreds of miles away.
