Lapinkaivo and Lapinharju

Lapinkaivo is the most famous kettle hole of Nummikangas. It is a depression that was formed at the end of the ice age as a result of an iceberg being buried into the esker. As the iceberg melted, it left behind a deep pit where a pond has formed. Lapinkaivo is located at the foot of Lapinharju esker. Lapinharju is the highest point of Nummikangas, a rocky ridge that was also born during the ice age. Lapinharju is a remnant of a glacier river flowing on site.

According to the story, gold-loaded horse-drawn carriages have been dumped in the Lapinkaivo. The depth of the pond, on the other hand, has been reported to be the same as the distance from Nummijärvi to Karvia - about 25 kilometers.

A monument to the great famine years can be found in Lapinkaivo. 1865 - 1868 was the last large-scale famine in Finland and Northern Europe. During the famine years, 8% of the Finnish population died. Emergency work was carried out in exchange for food aid - ditches were dug in the swamp in Kauhaneva, among other places. One of Kauhaneva's ditch diggers, Kustaa Juurakko, starved on the edge of Lapinkaivo in April 1868.

Lapinkaivo has a signboard telling about the site.
