The dragline excavator of Aitoneva

The dragline excavator is located along the Aitoneva Environmental Trail, in the middle of a large area that was used for peat production in the 1940s and 1950s. With a dragline excavator, the peat was dug out of the swamp using a large bucket and wires. The wires were used to pull the bucket along the surface of the bog, filling the bucket with peat. The bucket was pulled up on top of the machine, where its contents were tipped into a crusher. The crushed peat was loaded into a train car waiting behind the plane to transport the peat out of the bog.

Aitoneva once had two dragline excavators. Only this one has survived to this day.
