The king's spring got its current name after King Adolf Fredrik's visit in 1752. On a hot day on July 17th, King Adolf Fredrik and his entourage stopped at the spring to eat and rest. There is a commemorative stone telling about the visit.
Tourism started in the 19th century. In the 1930s, a hotel was built at Kuninkanalähde, which is still in operation, and in the 1960s, an inland swimming pool.
The flow of the spring is about 10,000 cubic meters per day and it is one of the most abundant springs in Finland.
The care and maintenance of the Kuninkaanlähde area as a tourist attraction and historical site has caused a lot of discussion in recent years. Measures regarding the maintenance and care of the area are pending, and hopefully the area will be renovated to be more visitor-friendly in the near future. At the moment, e.g., the bridges over the spring are in poor condition and visitors are advised to be careful.
