Viinikanjoki river

Viinikanjoki and its banks have a long history as a route, a hunting and fishing area and a place pf residence. Viinikanjoki is part of the long, ancient Kyrönkangas winter road. As the water bodies froze they offered a route from Tavastia to Ostrobothnia. The Parkano area was for a long time a wilderness area of the Tavastian houses.

In the 16th century, permanent settlements began to appear on the banks of the river, and the riverbanks were cleared for fields. Over the course of history, river water has given its power to several sawmills and mills, as well as to the floating of logs. Nowadays, the Käenkoski dam, built in the 1950s, affects the river's flow the most.

Viinikanjoki river is a beautiful part of the landscape of the center of Parkano. You can admire it e.g. on the coastal paths and on the Leijonapuisto park's mini golf course. Viinikanjoki has plenty of fish and is a very popular fishing destination.
