Hämeenkangas

Hämeenkangas is a sandy ridge formed by glaciers and glacial rivers in the southern part of the Geopark area. It is about 20 km long, at most 3.5 km wide and rises between 100 to 185 meters above sea level. The visible surface of the formation consists mainly of sand and locally coarse gravel.

The Hämeenkangas was formed between two continental glacier flows during the final phase of the Weichselian glaciation, approx. 10,800 years ago. The Hämeenkangas is the western extension of the Central Finland marginal formation, but it also has features of a seam formation. The Central Finland Marginal Formation is the last large-scale marginal formation  created during the  retreat of the Fennoscandian continental glacier and is about 600 to 1500 years younger than Salpauselkä.

Sandstones from Lauhanvuori can be found in the ridge of Hämeenkangas. There are paleobeaches, terraces and dunes on the slopes. There is a geological exhibition in the nature and sports center of Jämi.
