Messukallio cliff

Messukallio is formed from 1880 - 1870 million-year-old granite, which was crystallized deep under the ancient Svekofennian mountain range. It is one of the youngest granites in the Geopark area. The stone is coarse-grained and reddish in color. It is widely visible on the top of Messukallio. On the top of the cliff you can see striations created by the flow of the continental glacier. Messukallio also shows forms produced by the so-called onion weathering.

It is said that Messukallio got its name from the church folk who traveled on the lake. The cliff is located by the old Kyrönkangas winter road, which was travelled by boats in the summer. Once, a group of local residents were on their way to the Parkano church, when they got into a strong storm on the lake and had to land next to the cliff, which is why they missed the church. On the cliff, however, the oldest of them read the Bible aloud and the people felt relieved.
