Aitoneva peat production area

Peat production in Aitoneva began during the Second World War in 1943, when peat was developed as a domestic energy source to replace, for example, coal and wood.

In the beginning, the production was labour intensive, but it quickly became mechanized. In the 1940s and 1950s, production methods utilized large and specialized machines, the use of which required the construction of railways on the mire for transportation. The machines were mainly electric. Later, the methods have developed and today mainly large agricultural tractors and the turf machines they pull are used. As technical development progresses, the number of people working in the mires has decreased.

The development of the 1,100-hectare bog area began 9,850 years ago, shortly after the land was freed from under Lake Ancylus due to uplift. There have been both aapa mires and raised bogs in the area. Today, peatland forests and post-industrial miress created after peat production can be found in the area.
