Finnish forest reindeer fence

The aim of the Metsäpeura-LIFE project is to restore the endangered Finnish forest reindeer (rangifer tarandus fennicus) to the fauna of southern Suomenselkä area. The forest reindeer is the native species of the area, which disappeared from Finland more than a hundred years ago as a result of excessive hunting. However, the forest reindeer survived in Russian Karelia and spread to Kainuu after the Second World War, from where it was returned to the northern parts of Suomenselkä in the 1980s. The forest reindeer is a close relative of the reindeer.

The project has already released several wild forest reindeer into the nature of Lauhanvuori.
