Jäljet artwork in Kankaanpää

The artwork’s name Jäljet can be translated to Traces. Behind the artwork is a project where the artist invited the citizens of Kankaanpää to a free pedicure. The soles of the participants were pressed on metal plates on which the artist then etched the footprints, making it a form of community art.

“I wanted to make an artwork for Kankaanpää that would positively affect its citizens. “Traces” was born, an artwork that included people in it. What is more positive than the touch/massage that was given when the footprints were taken? I thought that this way I would leave a lasting impression and affect people for a long time.

I like to portray people, whether as a trace or something more expressive. In making art, the process itself is what is important for me, as I try to make the world more clear and understandable for me.

*While I was studying in the art school, I often felt that us students were being looked at strangely. Thus, now later I wanted to bring a genuine and positive encounter between a former student and the residents of Kankaanpää that also left me with a nice memory.” *– Virve Lilja
