Kauhaneva is one of the largest natural mires in southern Finland. The mire complex formed by raised bogs and aapa mires is diverse both geologically, hydrologically and biologically. There is a three-kilometer long trail, the Kauhalammin kierros, around the easternmost bog of Kauhaneva.
On Kauhaneva, visitors can get to know the raised bog. Raised bog rise above their surroundings, the main vegetation is Sphagnum moss. As the mosses grow, their root part is buried in the ground and turns into peat in oxygen-free conditions. The peat layers can be up to five meters thick.
In Kauhaneva, the surface of the mire is dominated by a network of hummocks and hollows typical of a raised bog. They form a ring-like structure that goes around the middle of the mire. Hummocks placed transversely to the flow of water are dry ridges, hollows are wet depressions. In some of the hollows you will pools of water. Pools and ponds are an important habitat for birds.
