Kuivakaivo kettle hole

Kuivakaivo kettle hole is located by the medieval Kyrönkankaantie road in Nummikangas esker. It was created when an iceberg broke off from the continental glacier into the glacial river that deposited the Nummikangas esker at the end of the last ice age. The iceberg buried in the gravel slowly melted, leaving behind a pit that extended below the water table. At the bottom of the kettle hole, a small pond slowly began to grow over, and eventually the pond turned into a small swamp.

The swamp, which covers about half a hectare, has a special feature: its peat layers are almost seven meters thick. It is the thickest known mire in the entire Kauhaneva - Pohjankangas National Park!

Kuivakaivo is in natural state and there are no structures for visitors. It is clearly visible from the Kyrönkankaantie (Kauhanevantie) road. There is a QR guide board telling about the place by the road.
