The water in Spitaalijärvi is acidic, its pH is 4.6. This is due to the SiO2-rich soil and a raised bog partly surrounding the lake. The waters in bogs are naturally acidic. Part of Spitaalijärvi's water comes from springs. Spitaalijärvi's water is believed to have healing effects. This may be due to the pH of the water, which is roughly the same as that of the human skin.
The lake was partially drained at the end of the 1860s, but the lake's water level has been restored by damming the drainage channel. However, the hand-dug canal can still be seen in the terrain.
The area has two campfire sites, a kitchen shelter, a camping area, two piers, a beach and two toilets.
No public transport.
