During the war, evacuees from Karelia were settled in Alkkia. When the reserve prison was closed in the early 1960s, a research station of the Finnish Forest Research Institute was established in the area, and the prison grounds and buildings were transferred to its control. A special work facility for conscientious objectors also operated on the reserve prison grounds until the late 1960s.
The Alkkia Cultural Heritage Trail is approximately 15 km long and features five informational signs along its route. In addition to brief descriptions, the signs feature QR codes that allow visitors to learn more about significant events in the area.
