Käpykintukka, nature trail in Parkano

Distance 6,5 km
Duration 2h 0min
Moderate

Käpykintukka follows the ancient Kyrönkangas winter road route, which runs along the area’s waterways. The same route line is also roughly followed by today's main traffic routes, route 3 and the main railway. The long history as a passage route is visible in numerous events and stories that have also left their mark on place names. More stories are told on the nature trail signs.

The nature trail passes through varied terrain. Wet sections are equipped with boardwalks. Rest area structures can be found at the southern end of the route at Käenkoski and at the northern end at the Forest Museum. The structures of the Messukallio scenic church are also suitable as a rest area.

Käpykintukka can be traveled as a one-way or round-trip route.

The route is maintained by the city of Parkano. The route is marked in the terrain with signposts and red route marks. The guidance is supplemented by a GPX track available on Outdooractive.

The route starts at the northern edge of the parking area, where there is the main route information board and directions for the route. About 600 m from the start of the route is the Käenkoski lean-to shelter.

Continue from the lean-to following the route markers northwards. About 2 km ahead, the route circles the beach meadow of Vehkapurunlahti along about a one-kilometer-long boardwalk section. After the bog section, the route rises to a moraine ridge and runs along it for about 800 m to the parking area of Eräkaidan’s cabin. The Eräkaidan cabin is in private use.

From the parking area, the route continues along the lake shore. After about 500 m, you reach Parkano’s largest erratic boulder, Sormikivi. From Sormikivi, continue about 600 m to Messukallio. From Messukallio, the route continues about 700 m to the Forest Museum, where the route ends.
